Summary

This feature enables you to navigate to any directory or document, on any network or local storage medium, as well as any page on the internet.

Access

This feature is accessed from any Editor, from the Navigation toolbar.

Use

Simply type or paste the destination address into the field and press the Enter key. For a local/network directory or file, the target will open as the active tabbed document within Altium Designer's main design window. For a web-based target page, the target URL will open either as a tabbed document inside Altium Designer, or in an external browser, depending on the state of the option to Open internet links in external Web browser. This option can be found on the System - View page of the Preferences dialog.

Tips

1. Destination addresses for directories and folders on local, or network storage mediums, take the form: file:///RootDirectory:/Path/Document.
2. Destination addresses for documents on the internet take the standard URL form: http://WebAddress. You don't need to enter the full URL with http:// prefix. Entering the short-form address for a website will also work, for example www.altium.com, or live.altium.com. However, the http:// prefix is required if you want to open the URL in an external Web browser.
3. When opening a new target address within the software, the directory/document will open in the existing tabbed document view used by the previously targeted address.
4. The field in which you enter the destination address is actually a drop-down list which provides a history of all destination addresses (valid and invalid) which have been previously entered. This history list is not persistent across design sessions. It is cleared upon exiting the software.

Summary

This command is used to step forward to the next document, in the sequence of documents that have been made active in the main design window.

Access

This command can be accessed from any Editor, by:

• Clicking the  button on the Navigation toolbar.
• Using the Alt+Right Arrow keyboard shortcut.

Use

After launching the command, the next document in the sequence of documents that were previously made active, will be made the active document. Repeatedly using this command will navigate forward through all previously active documents, in sequence, until the last document that was made active is reached.

Tips

1. When a document (e.g. schematic, PCB, text) or a control page (e.g. PCB Release View) is opened, it presents as a document view in the main design window, with a corresponding tab appearing in the Documents bar, at the top of the window. The active view is the document/page currently being viewed in the window, and its tab is highlighted to distinguish it from the others.
2. Click the drop-down arrow associated to the button to access a menu of all documents that were made active after the currently active document. Click an entry to jump to, and make that entry, the active document.
3. Cycle forward through all currently open tabbed documents using the Ctrl+Tab keyboard shortcut. Use Shift+Ctrl+Tab to cycle backward.

Summary

This command is used to step back to the previous document, in the sequence of documents that have been made active in the main design window.

Access

This command can be accessed from any Editor, by:

• Clicking the  button on the Navigation toolbar.
• Using the Alt+Left Arrow keyboard shortcut.

Use

After launching the command, the previous document in the sequence of documents that were previously made active, will be made the active document. Repeatedly using this command will navigate back through all previously active documents, in sequence, until the first document that was made active is reached.

Tips

1. Summary

This command is used to access Altium Designer's Home page. The Home page presents a number of distinct views and sub-views with which to browse and manage various aspects of the software. This includes views for Admin (including License Management and Extensions & Updates), Documentation, and a Workspace view – providing a fuller, richer graphical browsing experience of your open projects and their constituent documents. There's also a dedicated Start view, to get you up and running with the software, complete with integrated view of What's New – catering for latest announcements in the AltiumLive Blog. For those connected to an Altium Vault, views are also provided to browse and manage (if an administrator) elements including users, roles, vault structure and suppliers.

Access

This command is accessed from any Editor, by:

• Choosing the View » Home command, from the main menus.
• Clicking the  button on the Navigation toolbar.

Use

After launching the command, the Home page will be opened as the active tabbed document view, within the main design window. By default, the Start view will be presented, so that you can quickly see what's new in Altium Designer.

Tips

1. In the address field of the Navigation toolbar, addresses of the Home page, and all of its views and sub-views, take the form DXP://DocumentName.

Applied Parameters: Mode=Refresh

Summary

This command is used to refresh the active document, where that document is a web-based document.

Access

This command can be accessed from any Editor, by:

• Clicking the  button on the Navigation toolbar.
• Using the F5 keyboard shortcut.

Use

After launching the command, the active document, provided it is a web-based document, will be reloaded.

Tips

1. For a web-based target page to be opened as a tabbed document inside Altium Designer, the option to Open internet links in external Web browser must be disabled. This option can be found on the System - View page of the Preferences dialog.

This command is used to access the Events area, from where you can check the schedule of, and register for, training events that are available all around the world, as well as online.

Summary

This command is used to access the Workspace view - one of the sub-views of Altium Designer's Home page. The Workspace view provides a fuller, richer graphical browsing experience of your open projects and their constituent documents.

Access

This command can be accessed from any Editor, by:

• Choosing the View » Workspace command, from the main menus.
• Clicking the  button (where available) on an Editor's Standard toolbar.
• Using the Ctrl+' keyboard shortcut.
• Clicking the Workspace button in the Projects panel, then choosing the Workspace command from the associated context menu.
• Choosing the Project » Design Workspace » Workspace command, from the main menus.

Use

After launching the command, the Workspace view will be opened as the active document in the main design window. This view provides a neat graphical interface for browsing all currently open projects and their constituent documents. Only one project can be browsed within the view at any given time, and this is distinguished by a highlighted background. Click on a project entry to select it for browsing. With the desired project selected in the list, the remaining sections in the view present its constituent documents. Documents are gathered into logical groupings, similar to the sub-folder structuring found in the Projects panel. The exact groupings will depend on the type of project being viewed.

Actions can be performed at the project- and document-level, directly from within the Workspace view. Simply select the project or constituent document, then right-click to access a menu of commands available, and in context with the type of project/document selected. These commands are identical to those found when right-clicking over the project or document entry in the Projects panel.

Double-click on a document in the view to open it as the active document in the design workspace.

Tips

1. For Schematic and PCB documents, document previews are available. Previews are generated for the currently focused project in the Projects panel, when accessing the Workspace view. Previews for another open project are only generated upon selecting to browse that project within the view.
2. Use the filtering control at the top-right of the view to quickly find a particular project or document – a beneficial aide if many projects are open, or for projects containing a sizable number of documents. The content of the view will dynamically update as you enter a filter string.
