Applied Parameters: None
Summary
This command is used to manually reuse a vault-based Schematic Template. Altium's Design Data Management System caters for the ability to formally release a schematic template into a target Item (and revision thereof) in a target Altium Vault. Once the template has been released, and its lifecycle state set to a level that the organization views as ready for use at the design level, the template can be reused in future board-level design projects. A defined schematic template on the design side is mapped to a Schematic Template Item in an Altium Vault. Each release of the template stores the data into a new revision of that Item.
The design-side template is typically a standard schematic document (*.SchDoc
), but it can be purposefully saved as a schematic template file (*.SchDot
). Either source can be linked to, and released into, revisions of a Schematic Template Item.
Access
This command is accessed from the Schematic Editor by choosing the Design » Set Template from Vault command, from the main menus.
Use
After launching the command, the Choose Template dialog will appear, from where you can browse to, and select, the required Schematic Template Item in the desired Altium Vault. After clicking OK, the chosen template will be applied to the active schematic document. Verification that the schematic sheet is indeed using the correct vault template can be performed from the Template tab of the Document Options dialog. This will show that a vault template is being used, along with details of that template Item. You can also update the template (if a later revision is available), or switch templates, from this tab.
Tips
- The ability to freely (and manually) browse a target Altium Vault and choose a vault-based (managed) Schematic Template Item to be used/applied for your schematic document, depends on whether the the user's working environment is being enforced through centralized environment configuration management - delivered through the Team Configuration Center (a service of the Altium Vault). If available, the Center determines the environment configuration(s) that can validly be used, and changes the relevant areas of the Altium Designer environment to enforce the permitted data elements of the chosen configuration. The ability to manually reuse vault-based templates then depends on the chosen environment configuration:
- If the chosen environment configuration has one or more defined Schematic Template Items, then only those defined templates can be used. In other words, manual reuse of a vault-based Schematic Template is not possible/permitted, and this Set Template from Vault command will not be available. Instead the Design menu will provide a sub-menu of valid Configuration Templates that can be used.
- If the chosen environment configuration does not have any Schematic Template Items specified/added, or if you are working as an administrator, then these will remain manually definable by the user. In other words, you are free to manually reuse a vault-based Schematic Template using this Set Template from Vault command.
- When not using centralized environment configuration, and at least one revision of a Schematic Template Item exists in the Altium Vault, then you will only be able to use those Schematic Template Item revisions (latest) available to you. No local files may be used.
