Summary

The Edit Revision Naming Schemes dialog allows you to edit, create, and define revision naming schemes.

Each item in a Workspace is comprised of a series of revisions, with a new revision used to accommodate new data. ► See Defining Naming Schemes for Item Revisions for more information.

Access

From the Data Management - Servers page of the Preferences dialog, click the Properties button in the Servers region then select Naming schemas from the drop-down menu.

Options/Controls

Revision Naming  Scheme

  • 1-Level - Provides a single level of revision naming, in the range 1 to 9, or A to Z, of any width required. Since there is only one level of labeling, the revision name can only identify the Revision.
  • 2-Level - Provides two levels of revision naming, with a default form of Alpha.Number. Examples include A.1, or CZ.83. The first section, or Level 1 of the revision levels, is used to label the Prototype. The second section, or Base of the revision levels, is used to label the Revision.
  • 3-Level - Provides three levels of revision naming, of the form Number.Alpha.Number. An example would be 02.B.1. The first section, or Level 2 of the revision levels, is used to label the Model, the second section, or Level 1 of the revision levels, is used to label the Prototype, and the third section, or Base of the revision levels, is used to label the Revision.
  • Altium Internal Naming Scheme - Provides a single level of revision naming, in the range 1 to 9, or A to Z, of any width required. Since there is only one level of labeling, the revision name can only identify the Revision.
  • Extension Scheme - Provides a single level of revision naming for an extension, in the range 1 to 9, or A to Z, of any width required. Because there is only 1 level of labeling, the name can only identify the extension's Revision.
  • Content Types - Click to open the Content Types dialog which allows you to select and enable the desired content type(s) for use.
  • Apply Changes - Click to save and apply any changes made in the active revision naming scheme. The active revision naming scheme is whichever revision naming scheme tab you are currently on.
  • Reset - Click to reset all fields in the active revision naming scheme to their defaults. The active revision naming scheme is whichever revision naming scheme tab you are currently on.
  • Delete - Click to delete the active revision naming scheme. The active revision naming scheme is whichever revision naming scheme tab you are currently on.
  • Clone - Click to copy current revision naming schemes.
  • Export - Click to save current revision naming schemes as a file.

New Revision Scheme Tab

If Add New Scheme is clicked (see below), a new tab is displayed and the settings of the revision naming scheme must be configured.

  • Scheme Name - Enter the name of the new scheme
  • Revision ID Levels - Revision levels could be 1,2,3 depending on your requirements.
  • Item and Revision Separator - Choose the separator for revision.
  • Caption - the following default terms are used in the revision naming schemes. These terms are used to bring meaning and identity to different versions of the same Item.
    • Model - A model is defined as a style or design of an item. Having a Model identifier is useful when there is more than one model, for example, 'I have the previous model of that car'. The model section of the revision number must be incremented each time a new model is created.
    • Prototype - A prototype is a working model of a new Item or new version of an existing Item, that is not yet ready to go to customers. The prototype section of the revision number must be incremented each time a new prototype is created for a given model.
    • Revision - A revision is a new version of an Item. Using a sequential identification scheme makes it possible to see the history of Item versions. The revision section of the revision number must be incremented each time the design of the Item changes, when that change is not significant enough to require a new prototype or new model.
  • Revision ID Format - Choose Revision ID format for different levels. Could be numeric, alphabetical or ASME.
  • Minimum Width - The number in this field represents the number of digits used in the naming scheme. Use the up/down arrow buttons to adjust the length of the revision naming scheme.
  • Examples - Shows the preview of the revision naming scheme.

Additional Controls

  • Add New Scheme - click to create a new Lifecycle Definition. A new Revision Scheme tab will appear in the dialog, ready to be configured.
  • Import Scheme - click to import an existing revision naming scheme.
