Choose Design Rule Type

Now reading version 16.0. For the latest, read: Choose Design Rule Type for version 21

The Choose Design Rule Type dialog.

Summary

Depending on the context in which it is accessed, this dialog can be used to:

  • Specify one or more rule types to be exported, into a .Rul file, from the currently defined set of design rules for the board.
  • Specify one or more rule types to be imported, from a .Rul file, into the set of design rules currently defined for the board.
  • Specify the type of rule to be used when adding a parameter as a rule, to a supported design object in the schematic domain, or a schematic document.

Access

The dialog can be accessed in the following ways:

  • From the PCB Editor - right-click in the left-hand pane of the PCB Rules and Constraints Editor dialog, and choose either the Export Rules or Import Rules command, depending on whether you are wanting to export or import rules respectively.
  • From the Schematic Editor - click the Edit Rule Values button, in the Parameter Properties dialog. The latter is accessed by clicking the Add as Rule button when adding a parameter to the relevant design object (port, part, pin, sheet symbol), or the document itself.
  • From the Schematic Library Editor - click the Edit Rule Values button, in the Parameter Properties dialog. The latter is accessed by clicking the Add as Rule button when adding a parameter to a pin.

Options/Controls

The dialog lists all rule types, grouped by parent rule category. Simply select the required rule type (or multiple types when exporting/importing), and click OK.

When exporting selected rule types, clicking OK will access the Export Rules to File dialog, in which to define where, and under what name, the resulting rule file (*.Rul) is to be saved. When importing selected rule types, clicking OK will access the Import File dialog, from which to browse to, and open, the required rule file (*.Rul).
When adding a parameter as a rule, clicking OK will open the Edit PCB Rule (From Schematic) dialog, from where to define the constraints specific to the chosen rule type.
